Autumn Meme

Wednesday, 6 September 2017 01:38 pm
penlessej: (Greenman)
...because [personal profile] jo posted it and it looked like fun. Plus, work?

Crunchy leaves: What's your favourite noise/sound to hear? Crunchy leaves are a good sound. As is rain. During the autumn, I like the sound of the leaves blowing, the higher pitched sound it makes as they tumble about lawns and across the streets.

Misty mornings: What time do you wake up? What for? I wake up at 6 am each morning for work. On the weekends I do not set an alarm, but I am usually up by 8 am at the latest. Events, friends, guests, etc. can all impact that time obviously. For the record, I could sleep all day, but I choose not to because adult-ing.

Oversized sweaters: What sweater weather outfit are you looking forward to wearing? I like my 3/4 wool jacket that I crack out in the fall. Especially once it is cold enough to include a scarf with without looking like one is making a fashion statement.

Carved pumpkins: What holidays (popular or Pagan) are you celebrating this Autumn? I love turkey dinner, so Thanksgiving is always a big thing for me. Stuffing, cranberry sauce, squash and, of course, pumpkin pie. Yum, yum!

Ghost stories: What books are you reading, how are they? Ugh, I am reading a Foucault book right now that is a collection of his lectures on government and power in 1980. I say ugh because that man makes me very angry when I read him, and yet here I am (that reminds me, I need to do a Wednesday Reading post for this week).

Hot coffee: What's your drink this Autumn? Coffee. Always coffee.

Cold hands: Anyone to hold them? No, she left.

Spooky shadows: Any increased spiritual activity? Well Summer 2017 was pretty shitty and I am inclined to blame the solar eclipse because I do not understand it and it seems like a perfect odd event to link to the serious of odd and terrible events that have made up my summer. That is spirituality right?

Apple pie: What's cooking? (Or planned to cook?) I bought a book last week on Amazon on recipes for people with kidney disease, so I am looking forward to cracking that bad boy open and making some of that food while I am learning to live on my own again.

Scented candles: 5 favourite smells? Autumn has a smell! Either you get it or you don't. It smells like winter is coming (way before Game of Thrones people). Crisp air, doesn't carry the same smell of life that summer humid air does, and it usually has a hint of smoke from a fireplace somewhere in it. Also, if you smell for too long, it starts to bite the inside of your nose, because the air is cooler. I love that smell! Again, in my experience you either know this smell or you don't, so if you're going "what the hell is he on about," do not worry.

Hurricanes: What do you do on rainy days? I live on the edge of a rainforest in one of the rainiest parts of North America. When it rains you just keep doing your thing, otherwise you'd be stuck inside a lot. Always carry and umbrella, if you think you a need a raincoat for the day, take it, and if you are super ambitious keep rubber boots in the trunk (hiking boots in my case, because you never know when a random hike will fall into your life).

Cinnamon: What are your favourite spices? All spices. I like food that has substance and depth to the flavour.

Haunted hayrides: Do you see your friends over the Summer or do you have to wait till Autumn? I see my friends whenever I want. Summer is for camping, swimming, canoeing, hiking and golf. Autumn is wrapping up camping, great hikes in the beautiful changing forest and squeezing in a few BBQs before it is too cold to enjoy it. Oh and pumpkin spice beer. Yes pumpkin. spice. beer.

Monster masks: What's your make-up/morning routine? I am a creature of routine, so it never changes. Wake up at 6 am. Shower. Boxers and undershirt on, shave, comb hair, brush teeth, comb hair a second time. Socks. Pants. Shirt. Belt. Pour coffee into thermos, pour half cup for morning. Watch news while drinking coffee. Finish coffee. Boots. Jacket. To the car and drive to work. Takes about 40 minutes. I am usually at work for 7 am each day.

Black cat: What pets do you have/want? I am moving into a rental that does not allow pets, so no pets for now. However, Meganne and I did have two wonderful cats (one with three legs) and a dog. She is keeping all of the animals and they were all hers to begin with.

Meme: Just For Fun

Saturday, 26 August 2017 11:48 pm

This meme has been making the rounds, so I figured I'd throw my two cents in.

CAN YOU FILL THIS OUT WITHOUT FIBBING?
I generally fill things out without fibbing, so I think I can, yes.

1. What was the last thing you put in your mouth?
Coffee, before that a bagel. I am eating breakfast at night because I am up all night standing watch keeping an eye on the wildfires in BC.

2. Where was your profile picture taken?
In my office. It is the floating shelf above my television which sits on top of one of many bookshelves.

3. Worst pain you've ever experienced?
I get cluster headaches twice a year around the solstices. They are the worst pain that I have ever experienced. Feels like someone is drive a spike down through your eye ball and into your cheek bone and then tap, tap, taping on it with a hammer. I cringe thinking about the pain and never look forward to headache season.

4. Who was the last person to make you laugh?
I haven't genuinely laughed in at least a week. I think I have pretty good reasons though. Want to try?

5. How late did you stay up last night?
So late I never went to bed. I stood my first watch last night from 6 pm to 6 am this morning. I went to bed after a little bite to eat this morning around 7 am and woke back up at 1 pm. And here I am again for my 12 hour watch.

6. If you could move somewhere else, where would it be?
I love where I live right now. If I could just drop everything I'd move somewhere into the interior of BC in the mountains somewhere. Get away from everyone.

7. Ever been kissed under fireworks?
Yes in Las Vegas during New Years.

8. Which of your Facebook friends lives closest to you?
Probably the women formerly known as my SO, we are still friends on Facebook and we still own and live in a house together. So yeah, I'll go with that.

9. How do you feel about turkey burgers?
Given an option between them and real burgers, I wouldn't pick them. If it was the only thing being served, sure but there had better be some fancy cranberry aioli or something.

10. When was the last time you cried?
Too much this week. I am not afraid to admit and since you told me I had to be honest earlier. Too much this week.

11. Who took your profile photo?
I took it. You have something against my profile photo or something?

12. Who was the last person you took a picture with?
Something work related no doubt. I honestly do not recall.

13. What's your favourite season?
Summer and into Fall.

14. If you could have any career.
Author/journalist.

15. Do you think relationships are ever worth it?
Fuck off and ask me in a few months.

16. If you could talk to ANYONE right now who would it be?
Fucking right my younger self. Smarten the fuck up is what I would say. He would get it too.

17. Are you a good influence?
I like to hope so...

18. Does pineapple belong on pizza?
Anything you want can be on pizza really. What kind of a question is this? Would I put it on my pizza? No, I do not like mixing salty and sweet too often. But again, if it was the only pizza in the room, I'd eat it. My philosophy with all food is generally that if a group of people eat it than it is at least safe and won't hurt you.

19. You have the remote, what channel are you watching?
News channel most likely. If not that than probably the Discover Channel. Anything but sitcoms with laugh tracks.

20. Who do you think will fill this out?
Some of my friends already have. I suppose bored people who people who just want to share something. I dunno really...did you fill it out?

XO Meme Callout

Monday, 1 May 2017 09:26 am
penlessej: (Greenman)
Since taking over as Executive Officer on HMCS YELLOWKNIFE, a running theme has started on my cabin door of posting a daily XO meme. Last week, given my known inclination toward Star Trek, I had a different Riker meme for each day. It became a running joke (as these things tend do in the doldrum of sea life) for each day with people coming to see which one I had posted for the day.

However, as the XO, I have a whole list of "other things" that I should be working on other than looking and posting memes. Hence the callout to you my friends. I am looking for XO theme memes to post on my door. Anything with an XO flavour will count so Riker, Mr. Bush from Hornblower, Spock, the Dr/CO from Master and Commander, etc, etc. I am open to anything really. Simply post the meme in the thread here (photo or link to photo, your choice). If it makes the cut and ends up on my door, I will take a photo of it and post it here on the weekend. Bonus points if you make the meme yourself, I will take a photo and you will get credit (and the personal satisfaction of knowing one of your creations was posted on a Canadian warship, for whatever that is worth).

What are you waiting for? Getting searching and post that XO meme!

Childhood Survey Meme

Friday, 28 April 2017 04:49 pm
penlessej: (Default)
I just got home from sea for the week (back out next week Mon-Fri). I've got Fleetwood Mac on the record deck and a cold beer in my hand, so I am happy. I will post more about my adventures at sea tomorrow, for today you get this meme courtesy of [personal profile] viciousteeth.

Childhood Survey

What was your favorite tv show or cartoon?

When I grew up in Northern Ontario, Canada we only had two television channels. One was CBC (the state funded public broadcaster) and the second was MCTV (a small local station for pretty much all of Northern Ontario, yes *that* kind of local). Coming home from school The Simpson's was on, so I grew up on Homer and Bart. When I was younger, I enjoyed Bill Nye the Science Guy and as I got older a cool show for teens on CBC was one of my favourites called Street Sense (it was all about living on your own, growing up, sex issues, etc.).

What was your favorite song?

Tubthumbing by Chumbawamba.

What was your favorite toy?

My favourite toy was not actually mine, it belonged to my brother. We had a toy Andy and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story and while I was older I had a guilty pleasure of really enjoying those toys. I thought it was cool how the company made the toys and they were the same from the movie. As I got older I had model ships that I used to enjoy playing in the pool with (morbidly I used to sink the Titanic all of the time).

What was your favorite game?

Monopoly and still very much is.

What was your biggest fear?

Vampires. I used to have terrible dreams of them where I would wake up very scared and sweaty. These stopped in my teens.

What was your favorite fantasy or daydream?

Becoming an astronaut.

What was your favorite food?

Spagetti.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

An astronaut.

What was your favorite book?

10,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Charley and the Chocolate Factory.

What was your favorite movie?

Apollo 13 and Titanic (not for the love story, I was obsessed with the Titanic and loved the visual accuracy of the movie).

Who was your favorite author?

My first favourite author was Lemony Snicket, his books and use of the English language made my head spin in wonderful ways and it was the first time I was ever exposed to that sort of unleashed writing.

What smell instantly brings you back to your childhood?

The smell of the orange soap that my dad washed his hands with to clean the oil off when he came home. We use the same wash in the ship and instantly after someone uses it in the heads (washroom), I am brought back to home and him coming in the house and washing up before supper.

Who was your crush?

Her name was Jesse Overton. I also had a huge crush on my grade 6 health teacher.

What was your favorite subject in school?

English. I also really liked civics and history. This hasn't changed.

Who was your best friend?

Riley Brown, his parents were teachers at the school and he lived two blocks from it and we would go to his place for lunch. We were cool.

Who did you admire?

My garde 5 teacher Mr. Huchabies (we used to call him Mr. Hercules), I can still remember the day he taught about how the House of Commons work and how a bill becomes law. I trace all of my interest in history, civics and politics to this one day. I was fascinated by the idea of seats and a Speaker and the Queen. It was a pivotal moment in my life. He also used to give us sour blasters when we got answers right, which was awesome. But his breath was terrible (probably from eating too much candy now that I think about it).

What's the stupidest thing you can remember doing as a child?

My dad bought me a snow machine on my 12th birthday. That winter, my cousin and I were fooling around in a field with it and we set up a massive jump off of a hay bail. Thinking back now that was extremely dangerous and I could have really hurt myself (I remember flying off of the machine and landing hard on the ground, I could have broke my back or neck in the process).

What's the best summer break of your childhood?

My mother has kidney disease and was on a dialysis machine when I was a child (she has had a transplant now for over 14 years), so we never got to travel much as a family. Plus, we did not have a lot of money until my dad secured better employment while I was in my teens. One summer we went to Muskoka (just north of Toronto, Ontario) for a summer at a camp for people on dialysis. It was a cottage facility on the edge of a lake and it had a pool, games room with pool table, a shed full of canoes and kayaks. I had an amazing two weeks there that summer and met a girl too (we held hands in a boat one night and I was on cloud nine). I can almost remember every moment of that summer. I almost won a pool tournament that my dad put me in (I had never played before) and since then pool has become a bonding thing for me and my dad. Ironically, Meganne was one lake over (and knew of the place growing up) enjoying a similar summer at her family cottage.
